Filternox NTU Terminator Tests – 2

The second NTU Terminator filtration test, held at the end of 2020, was carried out at a cooling tower system at our customer’s facility, one of the leading companies in the polyester industry. Filtration tests were performed under a pressure of 2.6 bar at a flow rate of 3 m³ / h, using serially connected Filternox® NTU Terminator filters.

3. Conclusion and Evaluation

In the filtration tests performed with the filtration of Filternox® NTU Terminator filters;

Cooling tower X:

  • An average of 40% suspended solids removal was achieved in one stage and 58% in two stages.
  • Turbidity removal was achieved on average 48% in one stage and 65% in two stages.

Circulation of cooling tower X water, taken into 500L IBC tank:

  • As a result of 1 hour of circulation of the water with an initial TSS value of 134 ppm and initial turbidity value of 49 NTU, it was observed that the TSS decreased to 17 ppm and turbidity dropped to 7.22 NTU.

As a result of the filtration to be performed in the cooling line with Filternox® NTU Terminator filtration system;

  • Lifetime of the tower filling will increase
  • The amount of chemicals used in the system will be reduced
  • The amount of tower blowdown water will be reduced
  • Cooling efficiency will be increased
  • Unnecessary stops / work interruptions will be prevented
  • Operation, maintenance and energy costs will be reduced
  • The cooling line will be protected from particles

Cooling efficiency will increase substantially as a result of all the above mentioned benefits.

Filternox NTU Terminator Tests – 1

Filternox® engineering and test team conducted filtration tests at a local food company’s refinery clean tower point in October 2020. Tests were carried out with serially connected Filternox® NTU Terminator filters at flow rates of 2, 3 and 5 m3/h  and under 2, 2.6 and 2.7 bar pressure.

Conclusion and Evaluation

In the filtration tests performed with the filtration of Filternox® NTU Terminator filters;

At Refinery Clean Tower Point:

  • TSS removal was achieved on average of 47% in one stage and 67% in two stages.
  • Turbidity removal was achieved on average 56% in one stage and 73% in two stages.

As a result of the filtration to be performed in the cooling line with Filternox® NTU Terminator filtration system;

  • Lifetime of the tower filling will increase
  • The amount of chemicals used in the system will be reduced
  • The amount of tower blowdown water will be reduced
  • Cooling efficiency will be increased
  • Unnecessary stops / work interruptions will be prevented
  • Operation, maintenance and energy costs will be reduced
  • The cooling line will be protected from particles

With all of these mentioned benefits, cooling efficiency is increased incredibly.

Sea water deep filtration with Filternox NTU Terminator

Sea water deep filtration with Filternox NTU Terminator to improve the inlet quality of UF & RO

We have performed another test with Filternox® NTU Terminator at a customer’s facilities, for one week. They extract seawater where occasionally there is heavy traffic of ships. The test was however carried out during a period with low ship traffic.

Filter 1 with 5 micron filtration level and Filter 2 with 2 micron filtration level were placed before UF and RO to improve working conditions and extend the life of UF and RO systems plus minimising the use of chemicals.

As a result of the filtration tests performed, it was observed that inlet and outlet waters appeared relatively clean. The filters performed very efficient deep filtration and the drainage waters from both were significantly dirty, with a high level of turbidity.

At the outlet of the sea water treatment, turbidity removing efficiency Filternox filters was 41% at the first stage and 68% at the second stage, on average. On the other hand, TSS removing efficiency in a single stage was over 70%.

Using Filternox® NTU Terminator filtration system as pre-filtration before a UF system, we can conclude:

  • The system can filter out peak or high dirt loads that may occur, especially during periods of heavy sea traffic, before they reach UF and RO systems and keep them protected.
  • Performance of UF systems and service lifespan of UF membranes will increase.
  • Thanks to the increase in UF system performance, the dirt load on the RO membranes will decrease and the service life of the RO membranes will also increase.
  • There will be no need to use the cartridge filters after the UF system, before the RO system; or if used, the cartridge life will be much longer.
  • Reduction in the amount of chemicals used in the system.
  • Decrease in maintenance time and expenses.
  • Decrease in the amount of wastewater discharged for the backwashing of UF and RO systems.

Is your well water this clean?

Another filtration test has been performed with process well-water at a food company.

After 1 hour of filtration, it was observed that the drainage sample was dark in color and contained a large amount of particles.
Filternox® NTU Terminator is capable of trapping extremely small particles, even smaller than 1 micron.
At the end of this filtration test, Filternox® NTU Terminator decreased the TSS level from 20 ppm to 8 ppm and turbidity from 25 NTU to 3.29 NTU.

Steel industry filtration test report

Last week we carried out some testing at our customer’s facilities. They are one of Turkey’s leading iron and steel factories. Our customer was quite pleased with the results.​

Filtration test was carried out with Filternox® NTU Terminator filtration system.

Using water taken from the cooling water delivery line, the Filternox® filtration system achieved a very high efficiency by removing 64.3% of TSS and reducing turbidity by 75.2% on average.

As a result of this test, we conclude that all the water can be cleaned to an exceptionally low degree of pollution in a very short period of time by using the Filternox® NTU Terminator filters. We recommend our customers to use them to minimize blockages in the system, save make-up water and reduce unnecessary maintenance work and energy losses.

 

Chiller cooling water filtration

NTU Terminator model has just been engaged with Chiller Cooling Water Filtration.

According to the analysis results,

  • TSS for drainage water is 91 mg/l, although inlet and outlet water is under range.
  • Turbidity for drainage water is 70 ntu within 90 minutes, whilst the turbidity for inlet water is 1.51 ntu.

Three days after the system was commissioned, the customer wanted to keep the pollutants accumulated in the line by chemical cleaning and remove them from the system. For this reason, a filter bag was placed in the filter drainage outlet at the same time with the chemical cleaning. Within about 3 hours, as can be seen clearly in the pictures, the high amount of pollutants were removed from the drainage through the automatic backwashing of the filter and they were kept in the bag filter. During this cleaning, the pollution was removed from the system with the successive backwashing of the filter and the customer’s system has become fully functional as it should be.

Well water filtration requires technical quality and capability

In general, prominent problems in well water filtration are grouped under three main headings:

  1. With the first start of the pump, heavy pollution comes in and sudden blockage occurs in the filter.
  2. Turbidity in the water.
  3. Iron and manganese in the water.

The solution to the first of these problems is challenging as it requires a special filter with backwash system. Usually a tank is installed after the well. This increases investment cost and adds the need to be cleaned periodically.

Filternox®, has developed solutions to these three problems mentioned above without the need for adding a balance tank.

With the first activation of the pump, all the sand, silt and other organic or inorganic particles accumulated in the well can suddenly enter the filter, cover the surface of the filter screen and block it. In this case, Filternox® patented double cleaning filter is the definite solution. The double cleaning filter discharges first all the coarse and cleanable particles, swept with a brush, via its drainage line. Immediately after this process, the remaining particles left on the screen surface are removed by the vacuum suction system.

 

 

If there is turbidity in the water and this is a problem, then Filternox® NTU Terminator takes over the solution. NTU Terminator incorporates a deep filtration screen specially developed by Filternox R&D division and significantly eliminates turbidity thanks to the adsorption property of this screen.

Thirdly, if there is iron and manganese in the water, since they are dissolved, first, chlorine is added to oxidize these metals to form rust particles. Filternox® NTU Terminator retains these particles within its special screen.

Finally the hardest issue: what should be done if the first and second problems coexist?

Our patented double backwash system Filternox® filter can also be manufactured as NTU Terminator as a special design, to suit the specific needs of your facility or industry.  This way, very poor-quality water coming from the well is rid from particles and turbidity.

At Eskisehir 3rd Regional Directorate Irrigation Project, a large fish reached one of Filternox® automatic backwashing filters that have been in operation since April 2017. This happened in spite of the coarse intake strainer where water is abstracted from the nearby dam. The automatic backwashing system of our filter has discharged the fish through the 2″(DN50) diameter drainage. The purpose of our filters is to remove such large contaminants from the system by means of our internationally patented dual cleaning device (brushes & vacuum nozzles). Otherwise, this kind of large contaminants may remain in the filter, eventually causing mechanical damage. Moreover, they may reach the irrigation system and damage hydrant, counter and other elements.

Incoming water that looks limpid may not be as clean as you think. Only after 12 minutes of filtration process, drainage water can be 50 times dirtier than the feed water.

Great success of Filternox filter with 20 micron during Shanghai test

HIGH TSS FILTRATION IN 20 MICRON

As an automatic self-cleaning filter manufacturer, Filternox® has designed patented new technology products to guarantee continuous filtration under high TSS conditions.

The sea water quality varies widely in various ports around the world and some of them, especially in Shanghai and Hamburg, where there is intense traffic, includes excessive high particle load. This situation causes serious problems especially in terms of ballast water.

Very high amounts of suspended solids cause two main problems if they cannot be effectively filtered out of sea water.

  • Organic and inorganic particles, which form suspended solids, accumulate in the ballast tanks of the vessels and cause a serious additional weight. The additional weight created by the accumulated sludge increases the energy costs and causes operational difficulties resulting from sludge removal operations. The disposal of the removed sludge  is also a serious problem, while it is only possible to clean it in dry dock.
  • The second problem is that most Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS) outlet water quality is not able to fulfill the IMO and the US Coast Guard standards due to the continuous failure of the automatic filter, which cause severe operational distress, damage and loss of time.

As is known, the filtration level of the filters used in ballast water treatment systems should be very low, since it is necessary both to reach the above mentioned standards and to increase the efficiency of the disinfection system, which is applied after filtration.

In the light of this information, the Filternox® R & D group applied for the test of their specially designed filter with double-action cleaning system, developed in 2018, in an accredited test facility in the Netherlands.

The test includes two objectives:

  • The first objective is to ensure the highest possible removal of living organisms.

As a result of the 20 micron filtration test, the rate of living organism removal in the Filternox double cleaning system was 99%.

  • The second objective is to perform the highest pollution concentration test where the filter can perform all functions without interruption.

For this purpose, the so-called test “Shanghai Test”, the synthesized sludge was dosed into the filter inlet water to adjust the water to be filtered to the SS value of 1850 ppm. As a result of this test carried out with a 20 micron filter screen, the Filternox® filter has successfully completed uninterrupted operation by providing perfect cleaning on the screen surface after every automatic backwash with all its functions.

 

The tests were carried out for 5 days and were registered with a detailed result report. Those interested can request a detailed report of this test from info@filternox.com.

The success of the tests is the result of in-depth experience of Filternox® staff,  contributing to the design of Filternox® products over 30 years.
